Historic US-Cuba talks between Obama and Castro

Image
Presidents  Barack Obama  and  Raul Castro  have made history by holding the first formal, face to face talks between leaders of the United States and  Cuba  in over half a century. Meeting at the Summit of the Americas in  Panama , they agreed to press ahead with improving relations. After decades of hostility, key differences remain – but the focus is now on the future. “My message here is that the Cold War is over,” Obama told reporters after the meeting. “I think we have to be very clear. Cuba is not a threat to the United States.” He also stressed: “We are not in the business of regime change. We are in the business of making sure that the Cuban people have freedom and the ability to participate and shape their own destiny and their own lives, and supporting civil society.” At their 80-minute meeting on Saturday, Obama and Castro sat side by side in polished, wooden chairs in a small conference room. The mood was cordial but busine...

By Tim Hepher The two plane giants showed mixed results in the traditionally slow first quarter for new plane orders but the gap between them in deliveries widened after Boeing posted record first-quarter deliveries. Wells Fargo: 'We like the new Microsoft,' so DON'T sell the stock

Image
(AP) Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Is Microsoft's stock a good buy right now, hovering at about $41? Or is it overpriced, with another drop looming when management fails to meet consensus revenue and profit targets? In a new research note, Wells Fargo thinks it's a good buy. The team, lead by senior analyst Jason Maynard, just upgraded the stock to "outperform," with a target of $46 to $50. Those prices would put the stock at or near 15-year highs, and within spitting distance of its all-time split-adjusted price of  $53.98, reached in 1999 , just before the Internet bubble burst. Maynard and team completely contradicted a research note issued by Goldman Sachs last week that advised investors to sell, with Goldman arguing that the Street didn't fully understand  all the headwinds that are hurting Microsoft's major businesses . Pshaw, is the general answer from Wells Fargo. While Maynard did agree with Goldman that the Street's consensus estimat...

Wisconsin coach rips the refs on CBS after losing to Duke in national title game

Image
Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan criticized the referees for letting the game get too physical. "There  was more body contact in this game than any game we played in all year," he told CBS in an on-camera interview after the trophy ceremony. "I just feel sorry for my guys that all of a sudden a game was like that." Here's the full quote: CBS:  "What was the difference down the stretch?" Ryan: " Well I told these guys how proud I was of them and it's just a situation where you just have to be able to handle all the hands and the checking. I mean all the body contact, there was more body contact in this game than any game we played in all year. I just feel sorry for my guys that all of a sudden a game was like that. They're struggling with that a little bit. We missed some opportunities. They hit some tough shots. It's just a shame that it had to be played that way." Later in the interview, Ryan made some indirect allusions to...

Obama casts Iran talks as part of broader foreign policy

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is casting the Iran talks as part of a broader foreign policy doctrine that sees American power as a safeguard that gives him the ability to take calculated risks. "It's been a hard period," Obama said in an interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. He added that it is "personally difficult" for him to hear his administration accused of not looking out for Israel's interests. Obama defended a framework nuclear agreement with Iran as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to prevent a bomb and bring longer-term stability to the Middle East. He insisted the U.S. would stand by Israel if it were to come under attack, but acknowledged that his pursuit of diplomacy with Tehran has caused strain with the close ally. "We are powerful enough to be able to test these propositions without putting ourselves at risk," he said, citing his overtures to Cuba and Myanmar as other examples of his...

Bali Nine Australians' death row appeal fails

Image
Two Australian drug smugglers sentenced to death cannot challenge the president's decision to refuse them clemency, an Indonesian court has ruled. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were the leaders of the "Bali Nine" group of heroin smugglers arrested in 2005. They are scheduled to be executed by firing squad in Indonesia soon. Australia has campaigned hard for their sentences to be commuted and their supporters say they have reformed. Both men were appealing against an earlier ruling which had barred them from challenging Indonesian President Joko Widodo's rejection of their clemency pleas. Their lawyers had argued that Mr Widodo had not given adequate consideration to the men's cases. But the State Administrative Court in Jakarta upheld the earlier decision, saying it had no authority to take the case. It is not clear where the legal proceedings go now. A spokesman for Indonesia's attorney-general, quoted by Reuters news agency, said the men...
